Extravagance

Blog Talkers Talk #63

What is the most extravagant single item purchase you have ever made, other than a house or car? Why did you purchase that item? Did you regret it later?

The biggest bargain I've ever found was a car, in perfect working order which I got off FREECYCLE.ORG.
The most extravagant item would be my tv for the lounge or my laptop as both cost the same amount more or less. I know it makes me sound really technologically savvy, but, trust me, I'm really not. I just know what I know and if it's beyond me then I'll admit that rather than trying to guess. Strangely a lot of people will use guesswork rather than just admitting they don't know.

Nowadays petrol is an extravagance specially as it's now £104.9 a litre (that's a metric litre for those in the U.S). Most of that is tax given to our money-grasping government for no actual, discernible benefit to us, the people who live here.

Friday's Feast

December 14th, 2007 Category: The Feasts, 2007

Appetizer. Make up a word and give us its definition.
My four year old and I use the word "Huggle-buggle" to mean an extra big cuddle. I love the word, I think it describes a big hug perfectly.

Soup. What is currently your favorite song?
I love Lonely this Christmas by Mud. Some people thinks it's quite sad or depressing but it reminds me how lucky I am.

Salad. What’s at the top of your Christmas wish list this year?
I want a dog, well a medium or small sized puppy but it's not going to happen sadly so I'll settle for a pair of skinny jeans in my size and height.

Main Course. Name a scent that reminds you of someone special in your life.
New West reminds me of mum when I was old enough to relate to her as a friend as well as a mum. Opium reminds me of mum when I was a child.
Dessert. Who is someone on television that you feel probably shouldn’t be, and why?
I don't think Kate Moss should be on any media at all because she is a drug addicted alcohol guzzler who parties more than Paris or Britney and rarely bothers to see her own daughter.
She is paraded as a supermodel and seen enough to be a role model to young teens and she is not what I would want a daughter of mine aiming to be like.

The A To Z Of Me.

This a meme from Writing the Cyber highway. that was surprisingly difficult to do.
I never thought the letter "Y" and the most common letter used "E" would have been so difficult to use.

What you have to do is write a list of character traits or things about you that begin with each letter of the alphabet, and yes that includes the last six.
Here is mine.

Me in A - Z.

A. Attitude. I have more attitude than the average teen.

B. Blunt. I say what I think no matter how nice or nasty.

C. Cooking. I hate cooking and rarely do any.

D. Diabetic. I've been diabetic since I was 11.

E. Emulating. I try to be the kind of mum my mum was to me.

F. Finances. I have none.

G. Guilt. I am the queen of Mummy-guilt.

H. Heat. I'm always cold, when everyone is wearing next to nothing I'm wearing a jumper, shivering and looking for heat.

I. Impatient. I am very impatient. It is my worst trait.

J. Jealous. I get jealous when Robin talks about a certain ex.

K. Kack-handed. I'm so left handed and clumst that I'm kack-handed too.

L. Little House On The Prairie. I'm hoping to buy the entire sets.

M. Mummy. I'm a mummy. I love it.

N. Neuropathy. I have neuropathy in my legs and hands.

O. Obstinate. Once I make up my mind I never change it.

P. Pessimistic. I am very pessimistic.

Q. Quiet. I love sitting down in peace and don't talk much with strangers.

R. Rebellious. I hate authority and cannot stand being told what to do. If someone told me to sit down I'd stand up immediately no matter what the consequences.

S. Secrets. I never tell secrets.

T. Tv. I love watching U.S crime shows like CSI or Special Victims and a special mention goes to House M.D.

U. Ugly. I've been called this many times as a kid and teen.

V. Vertigo. I get really dizzy and sick if I stand up too quick.

W. Writer. I write short stories mainly non-fiction.

X. Xenophobic. One of the things I hate in others. (it means hating other nationalities.

Y. Yes. I've been proposed to and said yes three times.

Z. Zoo. I think all zoos should be closed down except Singapore zoo which has the biggest enclosures I've ever seen.

I'd like to tag my most favourite blog for this as I'd love to know a bit more about the person behind the blog.

I don't know where I'm from.

The Mini Interview.

Jen of Dirty Little Secret.

is conducting several mini-interviews so being the greedy, avaricious bugger I am I immediately asked for an interview for me.

She kindly obliged, so here it is:

1. What inspired you to start blogging?

When I started blogging it was my idea to have an online way of having memories of my sons childhood and my life as his mum. Something he could in time, look back on and maybe get to know his mum a bit better. It evolved and adapted over time and is now more of a dumping ground for everything including news items, family exploits and strong opinions, with a bit of my writing and humour added in for good measure.

2. What is your dream job (besides being a mom) and why?

My dream job would be one where I get to use my mind and am involved with people.
I always wanted to be a social worker or something like that. I like the idea of helping someone with their life and battling through endless forms and red tape.
The two occupations that most appealed to me were social worker as I've already mentioned and probation officer.

3. What TV show do you love but are ashamed that you love?

I love the following tv shows that I'll only admit to online where I'm more or less anonymous. I love these silly, immature or just badly acted / pathetic shows so much that I've even considered buying the box set DVD's.

* Hidden Palms.
* Melrose Place.
* Beauty And The Beast. (the one with Linda Hamilton.)
* America's Next Top Model.

Am I alone in loving these?

4. What is the most important thing you want your son to learn about you?

That even though he is disciplined (sometimes a lot) that he is a worthwhile, wonderful person who should never let people walk over him or bully others.
I want him to learn that caring about others is important in life and that even those with problems like mental health issues or disabilities are worthwhile people and should never be ridiculed or be treated nastily

5. Did you know your husband was "the one" when you met him?

I never thought for one minute that Robin would be the one when I first met him. I didn't expect any relationship with him would last more than three weeks mainly because of the distance involved. We met in an AOL chatroom and those types of relationships never last. It's a well known fact, but in my case it did last and most days I'm very glad and happy of that fact.

(I was 4 years old).

3 Things I Can't Let Go Of

I've been tagged by Awannabe of I Don't Know Where I'm Going to write a meme of the three things in life that I cannot let go of.
So here are my three

1) Talking to my mum every day.

I admit it I'm a mummy's girl, I've always loved, admired and really, really wanted to be more like my mum. I can't imagine ever not having her in my corner to give me advice or support.

2) My cigarettes.

I'm hopelessly addicted to nicotine, I need my little puffs to help me battle through the day specially the days I'm in pain. I enjoy smoking and yes I know about the health risks and I still smoke. (you have sex don't you? that's a health risk too but I can't see you giving that up)

3) Warmth.

I'm always cold, freezing in fact so I'm always on the look-out for warmer clothes and lovely warm fires plus those snuggly buggly fleecy, fluffy bedsocks.
The only time I'm warm enough to be comfortable is when I'm near enough sitting in a fire.

Laughter, Tears & Anger

What was the last thing you cried about? Laughed about? Got angry about?

Crying.

The last time I truly cried, cried heart wrenching sobs, that period of time spent with tears coursing down my face & my heart breaking into a thousand tiny shards was the day I discovered my son was lonely, lonely & unhappy.

My son, my pride & joy, my reason for living & the most special, wonderful, gorgeous, caring & affectionate child I have ever known was unhappy & I did not know what to do to make it right for him.

I want my son to live a life full of joy & happiness, full of friends & success, yet not having attained that for myself means that while I know what I want for my son I do not know how to get it for him.
The guilt I feel at this tears me up at times specially when he asks for a brother or sister so he can have a playmate. This is not something that is going to happen, no matter how much I or my son wish it & the guilt at failing my son is something that always brings me to tears & I suspect always will.

Laughter.

The last time I laughed was I suspect a long time ago before all the money worries & strains & disappointments of adult, grown up life got in the way.
I am one of those people that worry & if I do not have a major worry at that particular time then I will conjure one up. The proof of this is my permenant psoriasis which can extract the joy from any situation.

If I do laugh it is usually at something my son has said, something he believes is fact using his pre-schooler logic. Something like why he wants to wear two pairs of pants at once so that the pair underneath will stay clean, the fact it is in fact dirty because it has touched his skin for 12 hours is not an issue.

Anger.

I can get angry about a wide variety of things but what really makes me angry is anything that affects or hurts my family. I cannot forgive or forget anyone or thing that upsets my family. I get angry at the people, things & situations that hurt their feelings. I feel much more than intense dislike at the causes of the hurts, I want revenge, I want to cause that person pain & hurt. I want to fight that which hurts my family & smite them (I've always wanted to use the word smite in a sentence!).
My family are caring, decent, genuine people who deserve to be liked, loved & respected & I am always angry when I think they have not been given their due.
I make no apologies for this, the anger I feel at this is all encompassing & like a mother tiger fights for her young I will fight those that upset mine.

13 things that annoy me

Thirteen Things To Do With Fame That Annoy Me

01) Britney Spears & her bad life choices in all the papers, all the time.
Surely this girl has more than enough advisors? And who in their right
mind would go out wearing a mini skirt & no underwear?

02) Paris Hilton, I'm still trying to find out why she is famous.

03) Brangelina, I'm so tired of these two, if they cared so much about the
poor why haven't they given more to charity & how could he be stupid
enough to give up Jeniffer Aniston.

04) Adverts for giving up smoking or signs telling me I cannot smoke.

05) Advertising for places like McDonalds where the food looks wonderful,
tasty & edible when the reality is the complete opposite.

06) Programmes on the death of Princess Diana, she's dead, it's been 10 yrs,
for god sake let's just move on.

07) Kate Moss, she looks haggard at best, her clothing line was crap. She spends
all her time boozing & taking drugs, never sees her daughter but she's the
most wonderful woman alive? I don't think so.

08) Trinny & Susannah, they look awful & insulting the people on their shows in
order to get them to dress more like themselves in not entertainment.

09) Harry Potter, I hate the whole thing, it's a series of books for "tweens" &
an adult reading them just looks mentally delayed. Try reading a grown up book.

10) Jordan / Katie haters, she's always with her kids & husband. She's the first to
admit she's not the most intelligent but she made the best of what she had & as
a millionairess, with a happy, secure marriage & no financial worries she's
been more successfull where it matters than most famous people nowadays.

11) Reality t.v stars, Who even remembers most of them it's a quick 15 minutes of
fame then back to oblivion, unless of course you're racist or get your top off
for every magazine & newspaper in the country.

12) The Beckhams, I thought we'd got rid of them by giving them to the U.S (sorry
America) but no they're still in the bloody papers every day. Talentless, quite
ugly & extremely boring. Go away!

13) Stars & religion, I don't want to hear about your latest religion fad, see your
latest piece of Kabbalah jewellery & I don't want to hear you telling me what I
need in my life when the only reason you're where you are today is because of
luck / a pretty face / a sexual liaison with a useful person.

She'll have fun, fun, fun til her daddy takes the T-bird away

List three things you did this past week.
Out of those three: what was the most fun?
What made it fun?

1) Phoned my mum.
2) Started my writing course.
3) Went to the market.

All three of these activities were fun in some way & I enjoyed them all because I love talking on the phone & I love shopping even if it's for something boring like food. The most enjoyable & therefore fun activity I did was researching & signing up for various writing groups & of course my writing course.

I enjoyed reading about the various aspects of writing such as submitting articles to composition tips. I managed to pick up some really useful information & found some inspiring websites.
I also joined some writing groups & forums, some of which seem to be very friendly & I'm certain I'll be given lots of good advice & make some new friends who have the same interest in writing that I do.

This was enjoyable to me because it is something I have an interest in & a burning wish to know more & to improve on the paltry writing skills I currently possess.
This may not be in the same league as visiting Disneyland or playing your favourite sport but to me it was fun with the added bonus of hopefully being useful & educational too.

Reunion Schmunion.

Do you attend your high school reunions? Why or why not?

Almost every school in existence hosts reunions for their ex students, it is something many look forward to although I'm sure an equal number dread the very thought of them & others wouldn't even consider attending if their life depended on it. I fall into the last group.

I can imagine nothing worse than voluntarily spending an evening surrounded by people I disliked & who made me suicidally miserable when I was a teen. The very thought of being there with all my wrinkles & lumps & bumps on show reinforces my wish to never attend, maybe if I was Halle Berry or supermodel like (not Kate Moss, she's awful) I would be happy to attend even if no-one spoke to me, it's not as if I haven't had experience of this. I would be happy to attend in all my supermodel finery just so I could look down my nose at them all but as I'm more Rosie O'Donnell than superbabe it's not likely to happen.

I would attend only if I could look down on all of those who made my life so miserable & show them all my finesse, success & wealth. I would revel in their jealousy & ill will.

I think if I had had a better, friendlier, less miserable time when I was at school then maybe I wouldn't be quite so anti - reunions but as it stands they have no place in my life & thankfully never will. My last day at school was the best day of my life & I have no desire to ever revisit the source of so much personal misery.
